Our goals:

  • We aim to relieve poverty, in particular by supplying and renovating furniture and household goods to those in need in North East England.
  • We are committed to the relief of elderly or disabled people by participating in any charitable schemes or services intended to benefit such people in need.
  • Our organisation helps to protect and safeguard the environment for public benefit particularly through the promotion of re-use and recycling as a means of waste disposal and the provision of recycling activities.

Over the years we have evolved from a small furniture store with only a few volunteers to a thriving charity dedicated to ‘supporting vulnerable people’ through projects designed and adapted to provide sustainability to the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in society.

About us

CSS (Community Sustainability Services) started out at Sunderland Community Furniture Service, which was formed in 1991. We became an Incorporated Private Limited Company and Registered Charity in August 1994 and have been delivering our community support services, whilst expanding our reach and services, ever since. We are proud of all we have achieve so far, but are always striving to do more for our people.

We deliver targeted services for the vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the North East of England

These include:

  • Upcycling and renovating furniture for re-use
  • Supplying furniture and household goods to those most in need
  • Providing training and volunteering opportunities
  • Providing garden handyperson services for the relief of elderly or disabled people
  • Providing any other charitable activities
  • We pride ourselves on our diversity, providing a wealth of training including life skills and on the job training for volunteers and trainees.

We are part of the Reuse Network - a group of over 200 charities and social enterprises brought together by a collective belief that giving household items and furniture a second chance is better for our users, our communities, and our environment. As a collective organisation, we have helped over 1.5 million people, saving them almost £500m and helping them to live better.

What's more, we have helped to avoid 125,000 tonnes of C02 polluting the planet. We want to celebrate the work that we deliver as a network of organisations, and inspire more people to donate their unwanted items.
